We are continually researching other types of Rangefinders so that we are bringing you the latest designs and styles that you’ll find online.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding which type of range finder will work best for you? Choose from four different types:

1. Laser range finder.   Uses a laser beam of light to determine the distance to an object.

  • Advantages: Accurate (+/- 1 yard usually), Flexible, Can measure distances to any point within range.
  • Disadvantages: More expensive, Depend on batteries, Can be confused by snow, rain, or objects in fore ground or background (i.e. brush and trees). Some models have modes which ignore or select objects in foreground or background.
2. Reticle or Optical range finder.  Uses a built in scale in the reticle.
  • Advantages: Simple, Less expensive, Reliable, No batteries, Not confused by snow, rain, or branches in its path.
  • Disadvantages: Difficult to use (must interpolate or calculate distance), Limited accuracy, (80-90 percent accurate, must know height of object measured).
3. GPS range finder.  Uses GPS satellites to measure between user position and known point.
  • Advantages: Easy to use, Map of area, Does not require line-of sight.
  • Disadvantages: Some require yearly subscriptions, not all golf courses are mapped in data base, Clouds can block satellite signal, Gives distance to fixed points only, not as accurate as laser rangefinder, mainly suited for golf.
4. GPS hybrid range finder.  Uses both GPS and laser range finder capabilities.
  • Advantages: The best of both GPS and laser range finders
  • Disadvantages: Mainly designed for golf.

Which laser range finder features to choose from? Here are a few of the features that are available to consider on a laser range finder. Range finder manufacturers have various names for these features.

  • Angle compensating mode: Some range finders have an angle compensating feature or mode to aid in acquiring a distance that is more useful for ballistic performance. This can be especially helpful for the rifle hunter hunting in mountainous terrain.
  • Bow and Rifle mode: These are range finder modes designed for both archery and rifle hunting having a bow mode and rifle mode to make them more useful for various types of hunting.
  • Target mode: Some range finders have a mode where the closest target ranged can be displayed or the farthest target ranged can be displayed. This is helpful when trying to measure distance to small targets where background or trees and brush may be read or where trees and brush in foreground may be read while trying to range a larger target in background.  This feature is helpful to both hunters and golfers.
  • Scan mode: This feature allows the range finder to give the distance to the various objects targeted while panning.
